Even if automatic knives are legal in your state, federal law often restricts how we can send them back to you. Here's a breakdown of why that is and what your options are:
Federal Switchblade Act – The Basics
- Under the Federal Switchblade Act (1958), it’s illegal to transport or ship automatic knives (including OTFs) across state lines as part of commerce, even if you live in a state where they’re legal to own or carry.
- The Act applies to interstate transactions, meaning we cannot legally mail an auto knife back to a customer in another state as the manufacturer.
Shipping Exceptions
The law does allow certain limited exceptions, including shipping to:
- Active-duty military
- Law enforcement
- A first responder
- A resident of Oregon
The AKOA Form
To comply with federal and internal policy:
- We require a properly completed Automatic Knife Opening Agreement (AKOA) to verify you're:
- Active military, law enforcement, first responders, or an Oregon resident;
- Sending and receiving the knife under the exception.
- Without a signed AKOA, we cannot return your automatic knife directly.
What You Can Do
- Complete the AKOA form with your service request, if you’re eligible, we can return the knife directly after service.
- If you're ineligible:
- Ask an authorized dealer in your state to receive the knife for you.
- Ask a qualifying friend or family member to receive the order on your behalf.
Why This Matters
Even if an automatic knife is legal where you live, federal law governs its shipment across state lines. We must comply or risk serious penalties.
Automatic knives are legal to own in many states,
but federal law prohibits interstate shipping of them for business unless you qualify under AKOA.
No AKOA = shipping only to eligible parties or dealers within your state.
